What Type of Apps is Most Popular?

Mobile applications of various categories are released in the market every year. From education to health or from social networking to gaming, mobile apps are a constant presence in every sector we come across in our day to day lives. So which is that particular category of applications that appeals most to the contemporary mobile audience? According to research reports released in the recent past, gaming apps have recorded the maximum number of downloads and are thus the most famous type of apps available at the application stores. From the iOS to the Android platform customers, and from Windows Phone to BlackBerry users, gaming mobile apps are preferred by the audience of every operating system.

The figures retrieved from the research reports points out to the following download rates:

1. Gaming applications – 38 percent

2. Social Networking applications – 35 percent

3. Music applications – 29 percent

The same research reports conclude the app usage rates at:

1. Gaming applications – 31 percent
2. Social Networking applications – 29 percent
3. Utility applications – 25 percent

The biggest factor that has led to gaming mobile applications becoming the most popular among today’s mobile audience is its superior quality user experience. The most important factor judging the success or failure of apps is their interaction and engagement properties. This means that the easier a mobile application is in understanding and lesser the time spent to learn about how to use its features, the more successful will the app be. This is even more true in the case of gaming apps since customers use these types of software to relax during work breaks or while being away from home work. Gaming apps are generally designed in such a way that customers learn about playing the game as soon as he/she has operated it for the first time. It is to be remembered that if gaming mobile applications take too long to understand, users will lose interest and switch over to the next available software.

Another reason why gaming apps are used more frequently by customers of all age groups is that they are simple by nature. This means that even a small child who has no previous knowledge of how the technology of gaming mobile applications works immediately acquaints him/her with the model of the app’s UI. The interface of a gaming app is so simple in design that its features become well formed and completely embedded in a user’s mind upon the first use. Once the application UI is simple, it will also encourage the users to interact more involuntarily with one another and with the developer.

Though gaming apps are the most popular and more than 70 percent of mobile device users play at least one game everyday, it is difficult for a software designer to develop new gaming applications as per their demand. This is because of the fact that the competition in the gaming arena is very high and around 20 percent users delete a gaming app as soon as they can locate a similar but better one.
Mobile gaming has not seen a better time, say mobile market analysts, pointing out that users spend at least 7.8 hours every month on playing their favorite games on their devices. The iOS and Android platforms lead in running gaming apps for the maximum time with 14.7 and 9.3 hours per month respectively.
